Ulster is consistently regarded as one of the most outward-looking institutions in the world, ranked in the top 25% of all UK universities for research, and has earned an international reputation for research excellence, innovation and entrepreneurship.
As a research-led university, Ulster strives to be a nexus of learning where research permeates our operations and is the basis of our reputation, enhances our student experience and is the foundation for our continuous improvement.
As a civic university, we focus our efforts on global, societal issues and ensure that the outputs of our research have a positive impact on civic society. We partner with industry, government and universities to inform and develop impact. We invest to bring to market the intellectual property arising from our work and pro-actively target businesses which align with our strategic research themes, matching research expertise to address industry problems.
Ulster University has established itself as a global leader in data analytics, connected health and medical related research. Smart technologies are helping to move care out of hospital and into the home, reducing pressure on the healthcare system. Our researchers are working to develop sensor technologies, point-of-care diagnostics and monitoring systems to improve clinical outcomes, free up hospital beds, predict needs and grow patient confidence and satisfaction.
We have built significant expertise in stratified medicine research over the past decade, providing workforce training that aligns with the key international disease and economic development priorities and health challenges facing an aging population. We develop new biomarkers, diagnostics and data platforms to better predict disease susceptibility, diagnosis, assess the stage and evolution of disease and understand patient responses to treatment.
Our new Cognitive Analytics Research Lab will also deliver world-class research capability, building upon a proud history of research in machine learning and the application of analytical techniques across a diverse range of domains. This unique centre will align Ulster University’s research capability in computing and intelligent systems together with our stratified medicine and Graduate Entry Medical School, creating the opportunity to develop a distinct research capability which has global impact on healthcare.
